Dr. Shelby Potkin a native of Santa Cruz, California, Dr. Potkin’s journey in medicine is defined by a rigorous academic foundation and a passion for serving communities with high-acuity needs. Dr. Potkin began her scientific career at the University of California, Davis, before moving to Michigan to attend the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Known for its integration of clinical training with high-level research, Oakland University provided the backdrop for Dr. Potkin to excel, earning her induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society—a distinction reserved for the top tier of medical students nationwide.
Following medical school, she completed a versatile internship at Kaweah Delta in Visalia, CA, gaining critical experience in the heart of the Central Valley. She then moved to New Orleans for her residency at Tulane University
Prior to joining us, Dr. Potkin served with Sanford Health in rural Northern Minnesota. Practicing in an underserved region, she became an essential resource for a community with limited access to specialized eye care, honing her skills in managing advanced ocular disease and refractive challenges.
Dr. Potkin is a recipient of the Glasgow-Rubin Citation for Academic Achievement from the American Medical Women’s Association, awarded to women who graduate in the top 10% of their medical school class. She remains at the forefront of surgical innovation through her active membership in the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS)
